Comoros – Local Community Development

One workshop – 1,000 possibilities

Situation

The Comoros is an archipelago consisting of three islands in the Indian Ocean. As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), the country holds a special status recognized by the UN due to its size, low level of development, and unique geographical location. The local socioeconomic reality is characterized by severely dilapidated infrastructure and limited access to technical training.

In the technical field, training is primarily based on an informal model whereby craftsmen pass on their knowledge through observation, with no structured educational framework, theoretical foundation or suitable tools.

One workshop – 1,000 possibilities

As part of the “Local Community Development” project, a multifunctional technical workshop is to be established with three main areas of focus.

Development

The workshop will develop durable, repairable, low-tech devices to offer new, concrete solutions. These could be used particularly in waste incineration. Our partner is currently developing a solar system that removes moisture from household waste, with the aim of minimising fuel consumption in clean incinerators.

Repair

Most devices and tools in the Comoros are overused and neglected; when they break down, they are discarded due to a lack of repair options. Against this backdrop, the workshop aims to raise participants' awareness of the importance of performing preventive maintenance on their equipment. The workshop will also offer repair services for worn-out devices.

Training

The long-term goal is to set up a technical training centre to encourage employment among young people. Upon completion of the training programme, participants will be able to carry out their own projects and establish their own micro-enterprises. Trainees can rent equipment or purchase suitable tools from the workshop. Other trainees may also find permanent employment within the project itself.

The project is based on a simple yet effective concept: a workshop that teaches skills and repairs appliances. It creates new jobs and improves living conditions. This integrated approach has a multiplier effect, in keeping with the slogan "1 Workshop, 1,000 Opportunities".
